Navigating the Indy School Industry and Outdoor Leadership Insights

Updated: Apr 21, 2025

When it comes to navigating the independent school industry and leading outdoor adventures, there is a wealth of knowledge to be gained. As someone who has spent years as a CFO/COO in the independent school sector, I have had the opportunity to blend my professional expertise with my love for outdoor leadership.

The independent school industry can often seem like a complex and ever-changing landscape, with financial challenges, enrollment fluctuations, and the constant need to provide top-notch education. As a CFO/COO, I have learned to navigate these challenges while also seeking opportunities for growth and innovation within the industry. One of the key insights I have gained is the importance of effective leadership and communication within independent schools. Fostering a strong sense of community among staff, students, and parents is crucial for the success of any school. By creating a collaborative and inclusive environment, schools can better adapt to the changing needs of their community and provide a more enriching educational experience. On the other side of the coin, my passion for outdoor leadership has taught me valuable lessons about teamwork, resilience, and adaptability. Leading outdoor adventures requires quick thinking, problem-solving skills, and the ability to make decisions under pressure. These skills are not only valuable in the wilderness but can also be applied to the boardroom, where strategic thinking and effective decision-making are essential. By combining my experiences in the independent school industry with my outdoor leadership insights, I have been able to offer a unique perspective on how to navigate the challenges of both worlds. Whether facing financial hurdles in the school budget or overcoming obstacles on a challenging hike, the principles of leadership and adaptability remain the same. As independent school leaders and adventurers in life, we can all benefit from stepping outside of our comfort zones and embracing new challenges. By continually seeking opportunities for growth and learning, we can not only excel in our professional roles but also enrich our personal lives with exciting and rewarding experiences.

Core Values

Five values shape every engagement, every piece of writing, and every trail. They are not aspirational—they are inherited.

  • Hard Work. Effort is not optional. The work gets done because it is worth doing, not because it is easy.

  • Authenticity. Leaders are most credible when they show up as themselves—imperfections, convictions, and all.

  • Integrity. What we say in the boardroom, on the trail, and at home is the same. Reputation is built one quiet decision at a time.

  • Service. Service to God, to family, to country, and to those in need. Every engagement is measured by whether it lifts the people the client serves.

  • Wisdom from Both Worlds. The clarity of the boardroom and the grit of the backroads are not in tension. The best leaders carry both.
